Local groups taking a stand against bullying Nov. 18-22 Halton's public and Catholic school boards will host activities to raise awareness of Bullying Awareness and Prevention week, Nov. 18-22. To kick off the week, a Safe and Inclusive Schools Conference for Halton District School Board (HDSB) teachers and administrators takes place today. It will be led by Dr. Wendy Craig, a Queen's University psychology professor and scientific co-director of the Promoting Relationships and Eliminating Violence Network (PREVNet). HDSB and Halton Regional Police will introduce the 2013 Give Respect, Get Respect movement at James W. Hill Public School in Oakville, Monday, Nov. 18 at 9:30 a.m. "We are firmly committed to ensuring all students and staff members can learn and work in a safe, inclusive environment, and have worked together with staff, student and parents to implement safe and inclusive school strategies," David Euale, HDSB director of education, said in a news release. Other activities in the week include: · Brookville Public School, in Milton, will host speaker Chris Vollum of Facebook 101, who will speak about respect, integrity and boundaries around social media use. As well, it will hold Pink Shirt Day on Wednesday, Nov. 20, to symbolize taking a stand against bullying. · Lester B. Pearson High School, in Burlington, will run a Town Hall with the theme of "What is your Personality?" It will deal with issues of student support and safety, diversity and contributions to student life at the school, and include speakers, motivational videos, and `open mic' sessions. · Gladys Speers Public School, in Oakville, will hold student focus groups on safety and belonging at school. In preparation, student representatives will be gathering feedback from classmates to share within the focus groups. The data from the groups will be collated, shared with staff, and discussed in an assembly. · Acton High School students and staff members, in Halton Hills, will distribute "Compliment-Grams" as a way to send a positive message to someone they want to know better, and help contribute to a positive climate for working and learning. The Halton Catholic District School Board will also join its counterpart and other school boards across Ontario in recognizing the week through specific activities, such as rallies, skits, announcements, posters, and guest speakers. As well, schools across the Catholic board will engage parents in conversations about bullying prevention and how to promote a positive school climate.
