Join Zonta on the bridge Nov. 23 by Abigail Cukier Special to the Beaver 7 | Thursday, November 21, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com A personal message from Bill & Elizabeth Graham: We look forward to building great business relationships with all of the surrounding communities and all of our customers. We have partnered and joined forces with the RONA Home & Garden Mississauga, Georgetown and Milton locations to better serve our community's consumers and contractors. Members of the Zonta Club of Oakville have asked local men and women to "join us on the bridge" Saturday (Nov. 23) to bring awareness to violence against women. It's part of Zonta Says NO, a Zonta International campaign to raise awareness of, and increase actions to end violence against women and girls globally. Zonta International has asked its more than 1,200 clubs to engage in activism on the UN's International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. "It is estimated up to 70 per cent of women experience some form of violence in their lifetime. No human development goal can be achieved as long as women and girls continue to suffer from violence or live in fear of it," said Liana Palmerio-McIvor, Zonta Oakville president-elect. "This march in Oakville builds awareness of this critical issue." On Nov. 23, local organizations including Halton Wom- en's Place, WHAM (Women of Halton Action Movement) and SAVIS (Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention Services) will join Zonta in the event. Participants will wear orange and march on the bridge at Lakeshore Road and Navy Street at 12:30 p.m. At 1 p.m., local councillors and Mayor Rob Burton will speak in front of central library. Zonta members will also distribute information. "It's good for us as a community to pay attention to important issues, not just where we live, but around the world," said Palmerio-McIvor, who is a Zonta member of 16 years. Her mom is still involved. "My mom stays because it is important to her for me to understand women's issues our community and around the world. Now, I have two daughters, ages 11 and 13, and they come to every Zonta event." Zonta International helps women locally and around the world. It has provided training, education, health, sanitation, agricultural and micro-credit assistance to women. Palmerio-McIvor hopes people who participate on Saturday will become more aware. "Maybe they will join Zonta or volunteer at SAVIS or help a friend struggling with violence issues," she said. "The more information you give people it helps them feel more empowered to make a change." To participate in Zonta Says NO, meet at Navy and Lakeshore at 12:30 p.m. Wear orange and, if possible, bring a sign that says "Say no to violence." The official Zonta Says NO day is Mondau. Nov. 25, when people are asked to wear orange. On that day, Niagara Falls, N.Y. will be lit up orange.
