- Description
- John lived all his life on the family farm near Palermo, Trafalgar Township, Lot 34, Conc. 1, SDS. This box was handmade either for John or by him, of wood lined with old advertising newsprint, with hide such as pigskin or cowhide covering the lid as the close-lying hair still remains, and with hand-forged handles and clasp. Studs decorate the box and also spell John's initials. The leather on the lid is neatly scalloped along the edge and leather strips decorate the lid interior and exterior.
Inside the box are keepsakes from John's life. These have also been photographed and added to this online collection. Among the contents are medallians from school and other events, a camera, family photographs, a mother of pearl coin purse, straight edge razors, his son John Walker Smith's Book of Common Prayer, eyeglasses and a pince-nez and more.
There are 4 photographs of the box exterior and interior in this record. Click on "Pages" to view each. - Notes
- John's family spelled his middle name as "Durlan" in many documents but his birth certificate says it is "Durland".
- Inscriptions
- The box has the initials, JDS, hammered in tacks into the lid.
