Schools have yet to be selected. Associate Education Director Jeff Blackwell cautioned trustees against approving the program for all schools right from the start, in case they run into problems. He said a two-year, Region-wide rollout was possible -- and still could happen -- depending on the findings of the first-year review. The board is also actively seeking top-qualified French-speaking teachers, well-educated in teaching children with diverse learning needs. "We anticipate we will have teachers in front of our Grade 1 students, who have taught Core French in Grades 4-8 and teachers, who do Immersion relief," Blackwell said, answering vice-chair Kathryn Bateman-Olmstead's concern on whether enough qualified teachers could be hired to accommodate increasing the program to 24 schools. A dedicated classroom will also be found for French as a core subject in Grades 7-8 within five years so teachers don't have to work out of a cart. Despite many concerns, trustees decided to make it a requirement for parents to register their children for French Immersion by February 2014 for the 2014-15 school year. Families new to Halton or those, whose children didn't attend Kindergarten in Halton, will be allowed to register their children in FI during the first week of school. The HDSB recommendations were compiled based on input from teachers, board representatives and parents and included the results of a questionnaire filled out by nearly 4,000 parents in June. Under the plan of introducing French as a core subject for Grades 1-3, students will still receive the same amount of French by the time they graduate to high school but classroom time will be spread over three additional years. Currently, students in Grades 4-8 receive 200 minutes per week of French, which results in them having acquired 600 hours of French by the time they enter high school. For related stories, see p.9
