House league hockey team hopes to `storm' the Air Canada Centre OMBA squares up with Town An Oakville house league hockey team is seeking online votes from the community as it hopes to earn the chance to play a full-length game at the Air Canada Centre, the home arena of the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Golden Eagles, a bantam white squad in the Minor Oaks Hockey Association, are one of 10 teams from across Ontario that have advanced to the "second period" of the Storm The Centre contest being run by Under Armour and Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment. The second period of the contest will determine whether bantam or midget clubs advance to the third period, a skills competition that would be held in Toronto to decide which two teams will play a game at the ACC. In order to support the Golden Eagles' cause, people can vote once per day per device (PC, tablet, smartphone, etc.) by logging onto bit.ly/180J3MY. Voting will close Dec. 8. If the five bantam-age teams still alive in the competition receive more votes than the midget squads, they will compete in the skills challenge Dec. 13 at the MasterCard Centre, the practice home of the Maple Leafs. LeafsTV anchor Brooke Pashley will host that event. The top two performers at the skills challenge will play an official-rules hockey game Jan. 6 at the Air Canada Centre. The game will be streamed live online for at-home fans and players will be asked questions during a post-game press conference. Participating teams will also receive hockey gear from Under Armour, and the victorious team will receive the Armour Cup trophy as well as a signature banner to hang in the rafters of their home arena. The Oakville Minor Baseball Association announced Monday that it has paid the Town of Oakville in full for outstanding fees related to 2013 field permits. "The OMBA is focused on the future, and the best way to move forward is debt free," said OMBA president Mike Paciuc. "We are confident that we can not only pay off the legacy debt from the 2013 season but also offer an improved baseball experience for our players in 2014." OMBA will field 19 representative and three select teams next season, with 220 confirmed and registered rep players. House league registration is underway and projected at more than 600 players.
