www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, December 6, 2013 | 22 All the world's a stage for performing phenom Vienna by Dennis Smith Special to the Beaver Artscene "Connected to your Community" Vienna Micallef Del Mastro, 9, sings, dances, plays piano and "wears her emotions on her sleeve." Chemayne Micallef said she and husband David were moved to tears when their daughter Vienna played Nocturne on piano last April. "She has musicality that is definitely beyond her years," said Micallef, a composer/ pianist. "She can convey her emotions extremely deeply." The Oakville girl won double scholarships at two events in 2013. Vienna earned four gold medals, plus voice and piano scholarships at the Peel Music Festival. She scored 95 for her performance of Nocturne there. Most recently, Vienna won scholarships for piano and musical theatre at the Rotary Burlington Music Festival. She won seven of nine classes there. "She likes the stage, loves to perform and likes to compete," said Micallef. "She's a kid who handles pressure very well." Vienna has a busy routine of practising, competing and doing homework. She's in Grade 4 at Fern Hill School in Oakville, but is completing the Grade 5 advanced curriculum. "It's a lot to juggle. We kind of take it as it comes," said Micallef. "She's a creative person and it's her outlet, so we can't see taking this from her." Vienna studies piano with Olga Chichova and Micallef, who's a classical concert pianist. "Children learn what they live," said Micallef, a platinum-certified recording artist. Vienna Micallef Del Mastro has plenty to celebrate -- the nine-year-old Oakville resident recently won scholarships for piano and musical theatre at the Rotary Burlington Music Festival. | submitted photo "She walks through the door and sees the albums on the shelf, so it's kind of inspiring." Vienna has reached Grade 6 piano level after just three years. Her teachers intend to have her compete at the national level in the future. Vienna has studied voice with Linda Fletcher for less than a year. "She is very organized and disciplined when it comes to the arts," said Micallef about her daughter. "She's competitive. She makes it a personal challenge. She knows what she wants and she gets it." One of Vienna's next events could be the Chinese Music Festival, slated for February in Toronto. She placed first and second in piano in the 2013 festival. The YouTube video of her playing Nocturne at the festival's Rising Stars Concert drew notice from singer Remigio Periera. "Check out this young talent... musicality at a young age," tweeted Periera, a member of The Tenors. Vienna is also on the pre-junior competitive dance team at Oakville's Canadian Dance Company. She'll travel to New York in the spring to compete in dance. "She needs to dance like I need to breathe," said Micallef. She believes film or musical theatre are among future possibilities for Vienna. "She has excelled in musical theatre," said Micallef. "She's a dramatic child, without question." She thinks her daughter will probably go to an arts high school. "She's a very artistic, out-of-the-box type of child, she's not a typical child," said Micallef. She said Vienna is very good at acting and has previously done commercials and modeling. Micallef said her daughter will be nominated as a young artist for an Oakville Art Council award. Vienna also supports animal rights and saving animals. "She really has got a passion for that," said Micallef. "She can't stop rescuing kittens." Vienna raises money on her birthday to donate to The Charlie Fund of the Oakville & Milton Humane Society. It provides emergency and specialized veterinary care to homeless animals in the care of the organization's shelter. Vienna also does Taekwondo in the summer. She has earned a purple belt and won medals. To view her YouTube video, visit http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rI4pl2r_ rc=youtu.be.
