Jeremy Welsh (left) and Kellan Lain celebrate a goal while playing for the Oakville Blades in 2007. Welsh is now a member of the Vancouver Canucks while Lain is one of two former Blades playing for the Canucks' American Hockey League affiliate, the Utica Comets. | Oakville Beaver file photo Local powerlifter wins two consecutive titles Oakville resident Ryan `6 Pack' Lapadat re- of them was Saturday and the other one cently won a World Natural Powerlifting was the next Saturday. "I knew (DeFazio) before joining the Blades," said Lain. "Being in the same town, you hear about them. They were a team you wanted to play for since you were little, and they always had a good team the three or four years before I got there." Lain and DeFazio also trained together in the summer of 2007, after DeFazio had completed his eligibility with the Blades and before Lain made the team. The ex-Blades were reunited again this year as Lain, DeFazio and Welsh shared a home in Utica. Welsh moved out in October when he was called up to the Canucks, but the other two remain roommates. A mailing address is not the only thing Lain and DeFazio have in common these days. They rank first and second, respectively, on the Comets in penalty minutes, contradicting any notion that Oakville players may not be as hard-nosed as their counterparts. "I don't like that perception. When you're from Oakville, people think you're rich or you're soft. In a sense, you're proving people wrong. This is the type of people we are. We're hard workers," said Lain, who has two goals, four assists and four fighting majors in 20 games this season. "We earn everything we get. Nothing's handed to us." Like Lain, DeFazio has also been cast in a checking role, collecting two goals and five assists in 20 games. The offensive stats don't scream for attention, but the 26-year-old is confident that scouts are impressed with the other elements he provides. "I'm happy with where my game is at. I feel like I'm playing the most consistently and best I have in three and a half years as a pro," DeFazio said. "It won't be goals and stats that get me to the next level. It will be intangibles, the little things." If DeFazio or Lain get to the next level with the Canucks, they'll join a growing list of Oakville players who have suited up for Vancouver. Former Blades forward Steve Pinizzotto (2000-2005) played 12 games for the Canucks last season, and Oakville resident Victor Oreskovich helped Vancouver reach the Stanley Cup final in 2011. Welsh, traded to the Canucks earlier this year by the Carolina Hurricanes, has dressed in 16 games this season for Vancouver. "There seems to be a connection between Oakville guys and the Canucks organization," DeFazio said. "I don't know if that's worth something to Kellan and I, but we hope so." -- Jon Kuiperij can be followed on Twitter @Beaversports 2014 BRIDGESTONE NHL ® WINTER CLASSIC TRUCK TOUR TUESDAY, DECEMBER 10TH, 2013.
