Morden Public School Friday at Oakville Arena for the school's weekly game of shinny. Clockwise from left, Zamuner passes some tips to goaltender Dan Stefan; he assists first-year skater Richael Oppong with her equipment; and he works with Alix Field, a first-year hockey player who has a figure skating background. Many of the participants in Friday's game wore equipment recently donated by the National Hockey League Players Association's Goals and Dreams Fund after Zamuner, who sits on the fund's board, was made aware of the school's need for hockey gear. | photos by Graham Paine -- Oakville Beaver -- @Halton_Photog OAK swimmer wins two Opportunity to play for hometown junior team a `dream' gold at Canada Cup Oakville Aquatic Club swimmer Dominique Bouchard won a pair of gold medals at the recent Canada Cup, a large international meet held in Toronto. Bouchard won the women's 100-metre and 200m breaststroke events in club-record times for females 17 and older. Evan White was OAK's top male performer at the meet, earning silver in the 100m individual medley and placing fourth in the 400m IM. His time in the latter event set an OAK record for males 17 and older. Other OAK athletes to place in the top 16 at the Canada Cup were Gamal Assaad, Erin Assman, Tess Cieplucha, Annika Grewal, Kyle Haas, Mackenzie Hamill, Kent Kikot, Bryce Kwiecien-Delaney and Reid Scarrow. Oakville swimmers also recently competed in the Nother's Invitational in London, led by Trevor Smith (six gold, two silver) and Aysia Leckie (five gold, one silver, one bronze). Kiera Brough, Zachary Ferguson and Ethan Ma each won four races, combining to also earn four silver and five bronze. Winning three gold each were William Anderchek, Anton Kaploun, Callum MacPherson and Julia Matuszczak. Anthony Ivakhnenko, Tristan Ferguson, Emma Miron and Rosie Zavaros won two races apiece, with Perrie Armstrong, Keri-Lyn Copeland, Emilie Gagne, Carly Jazbec, Christina Ji and Liam Robertson topping the podium in one event each. continued from p.17 but it wasn't minor hockey anymore, it was junior. You can't get down on yourself. It was just about staying positive and, when you got out there, making the most of your chances." Sloan concluded last season with 11 points in his final 13 games, then told the Chargers he wanted out. This fall, he contacted the Blades -- who he wanted to play for last season before committing to Mississauga due to uncertainty about Oakville's ownership situation -- and found they were also interested in him. "It's been a dream of mine (to play for the Blades)," said Sloan, who is friends with former Blades star Lindsay Sparks and family. "It's awesome. The organization is great, we've got one of the best fan bases in the whole league, and the rink is one of the best in the whole league. Having kids come into our dressing room to get autographs brings back memories of when I used to go in there." The Oakville Trafalgar high school grad said he is currently talking with several NCAA schools about potential scholarships, but he has not received any offers yet. At 5-foot-8 and 155 pounds, he is aware of his biggest criticism but believes his lack of size can also work to his advantage. "It puts me in a bit of a hole to begin with, but I am more shifty than other bigger guys," said Sloan, who could also return to the Blades next season for his last year of OJHL eligibility. "It balances out a bit, but a couple more inches would help." Four of Sloan's five points last weekend came in an 8-4 victory over the Newmarket Hurricanes Friday at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex. Sloan had two goals and two assists to pace the Blades' best offensive output of the season, while Kris Bennett (one goal, three assists) also had a four-point evening. Blueliner Daniel Jelic scored his first two career OJHL goals and added a helper. David Dischiavi contributed three assists, and Matt Luff, Greg Campbell and Dalton Bew also tallied in support of winning netminder Evan Buitenhuis, who made 26 saves. The following night in Orangeville, the Blades scored three times in the opening seven minutes en route to a 5-4 victory over the host Flyers. Bennett earned another three points (one goal, two assists) against the Flyers, with Matthew McLeod (three assists) also drawing three points. Marcel Fatovic, Bew and Campbell each had a goal and an assist, and Kamil Tkaczuk notched the Blades' other marker. Brendan McGlynn stopped 38 shots for Oakville, which was outshot 4230. The Blades will play three games in as many nights this weekend, beginning Friday with a 7:30 p.m. home game against the Kingston Voyageurs at Sixteen Mile. Oakville will visit a pair of division rivals, the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots and Toronto Jr. Canadiens, Saturday and Sunday. -- Jon Kuiperij can be followed on Twitter @Beaversports
