www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, December 20, 2013 | 24 Parents enjoying watching their sons continued from p.23 Also enjoying it is Terry, a retired school teacher who has attended all of the Golden Hawks' games this season -- even the ones played in Ottawa, Montreal and Vancouver. David, by comparison, estimates he has `only' attended two-thirds of Laurier's contests. Though Will and Owen both say they weren't pushed into playing basketball, their parents' passion for the sport undoubtedly was a factor in the athletic path they chose. "It was certainly our favourite game," Terry said. "When our three boys came along (Christopher is the oldest, though he chose not to play basketball), I said `I'm not teaching them to skate.' I didn't want any of that early-morning (hockey practice) stuff." The natural ability to excel in the sport also led Will and Owen to enjoy basketball, the same way David fell in love with the game as a youngster. "As a young person, when you start to have success at something, you keep motivated to keep at it," David said. "(Will and Owen) had some fairly natural skill. They're reasonably athletic, their hand-eye co-ordination is important, they've been playing since they were eight. "We're very proud of what they've done. It's great to see. It means a lot because it's a bit of a family tradition. But we would have been happy and proud of them no matter what they were doing." David and the rest of the Coulthards will also be beaming Feb. 21, when Bill, Andrea Blackwell and Candace Jirik are officially inducted into the Canada Basketball Hall of Fame at halftime of the Raptors' home game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Bill's Tillsonburg Livingstons team was comprised by employees of Livingston Lumber and Manufacturing Limited. Owner Gerry Livingston, a sports enthusiast, built a strong basketball squad by guaranteeing jobs to any high school athletes who excelled at the sport. In 1947, when Bill first joined the team, the Livingstons were a C-level squad. Five years later, they won the senior men's A national title and represented Canada at the Helsinki Games, where they started 3-0 before losing their last three contests. Bill led the Livingstons in scoring against Egypt (17 points in a 63-57 win) and Argentina (23 points in an 82-81 loss). Bill passed away eight years ago, but his passion for basketball is still alive and well through his family. "We're off to watch a high school game today," Terry said last week. "Because that's what we do." -- Jon Kuiperij can be followed on Twitter @Beaversports Laughton to captain Canada at world juniors Oakville's Scott Laughton has been named Canada's captain for the World Junior Hockey Championship. Canadian coach Brent Sutter made the announcement Thursday as the team prepared for the tournament, which begins in Sweden on Boxing Day with a game against Germany. Canada plays its first of three pretournament games today (Friday). Laughton is a first-round draft pick of the NHL's Philadelphia Flyers, who selected him 20th overall in 2012. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound centre played five games for the Flyers at the beginning of the 2012-13 season. The 19-year-old, now in his fourth season with the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League, has 50 points in 29 games this season, including a career-best 24 goals. He has 80 goals and 182 points in 205 career OHL games. Laughton, making his debut at the world junior tournament, will captain a Canadian squad that has just three returning players. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound centre has previously represented Canada at under-17 and under-18 tournaments. At the world under-18 championships, he set up the overtime-winning goal in the bronze-medal game. Laughton joins a list of Canadian junior captains that includes Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (2013), Ryan Ellis (2011), Kristopher Letang (2007), Mike Richards (2005), Scott Upshall (2003), Jarret Stoll (2002), Eric Lindros (1992) and Theoren Fleury (1998). Laughton also served as the captain of Team OHL in the Subway Super Series against the Russian national junior team in November. Cann earns ECHL goalie-of-the-week honours Oakville's Trevor Cann won four straight road games to earn ECHL goalie-of-the-week honours recently. The former Holy Trinity student posted a 2.40 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage for the Florida Everblades. Cann made 22 saves in a 2-1 win over Elmira last Wednesday and turned aside 38 shots in a 4-1 win over Reading. Cann made 24 saves in back-to-back 5-4 wins over Wheeling. Both games went to shootouts, with Cann stopping seven of the 10 shooters he faced. After playing one game with the Colorado Eagles, Cann was acquired by Florida, where he has posted a 2.93 GAA and .894 save percentage in seven games. The 24-year-old, a second-round draft pick of the Colorado Avalanche in 2007, sat out last year with an injury after spending the 2011-12 season with the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League.
