Five Rangers squads earn silver at Bell While four Oakville Rangers teams (minor peewee AE, minor peewee AA Red, minor peewee AAA and minor midget AA) won titles at the Richard Bell Memorial minor hockey tournament, another five finshed as runners-up. After staging an impressive rally in the semifinals, the minor atom AA Rangers just fell short of another in the title game. Oakville trailed the Orangeville Flyers 4-1 early in the second period of Sunday's final, but responded with goals by Dylan Lee and Liam Glover to pull within 4-3 by the end of the frame. However, Orangeville held on for a 5-4 win. Alex Dupuis and Owen House had Oakville's other goals. In the semis, the Rangers scored twice in the final two minutes to stun the Orillia Terriers 3-2. Oakville split its four round-robin games, falling 3-2 to Orillia and 3-2 to the Brampton 45's before downing the Whitby Wildcats 5-3 and Stoney Creek Warriors 4-1. Minor atom A Rangers Blue went 3-1-1 in its first five games before settling for silver with a 3-2 loss to the Woolwich Wildcats. Stevie Flynn and Noah Bulger scored in the final Sunday for Rangers Blue, which upset Rangers Red 3-2 in the semifinals earlier in the day. Rangers Blue also defeated Kingston Canadians 3-2 and Halton Hills Thunder 6-3, tied the Burlington Bulldogs 2-2 and fell 4-3 to Woolwich in roundrobin play. The minor peewee A Rangers lost just once at the Bell tournament, but it was enough to deny them the gold. Oakville dropped a 5-4 decision to the Cambridge Hawks in Sunday's championship game after opening the competition with four straight wins. Kole Schledewitz, Avery Robertson, James Carroll and Quinn Ligon scored for the Rangers in a losing cause against Cambridge. Jake Tomkowiak had Oakville's lone goal in the final, tying the game 1-1 in the second period. Meadowvale scored the eventual game winner late in the middle frame. Meadowvale also beat Rangers Red 3-0 in the first game of the tournament for both teams, and Oakville tied Halton Hills 1-1 in its second game to remain winless after Day 1. Sunday, at the Richard Bell Memorial Tournament, they added to their impressive credentials by taking the division title with a 3-0 win over the Burlington Eagles. "They're doing extremely well," the Rangers coach said. "The group itself has meshed really well. It's been great to see a group of 11-year-olds come together like that." The Rangers continued that process over the Christmas break. Oakville started the tournament with a 1-1 tie against Burlington, which sits second to the Rangers in league play with a 19-4-1 mark. The Rangers followed with three straight wins, downing London 8-1 and Orangeville 3-1 before blanking Caledon 5-0 in their final round-robin game. Burlington also won its final three to secure its spot in the final. Andrew Rozman scored twice for Oakville in the championship game -- the first coming 2:31 into the contest -- and Connor Calvert added a goal in the final minute of the second period. Jackson Roode earned the shutout with 19 saves, 13 of which came in the middle frame. Bessant quickly learned this season that his team was offensively gifted -- it scored 25 goals in its first three league games -- but was a little surprised to see how conscientious it was defensively. "I knew they would be an offensive powerhouse, but the focus on defence is always in the back of their mind," he said. "They understand there are two sides of the puck and they backcheck really hard." It won't be long before Oakville sees the Eagles again. The teams play twice in the first week of January as the regular season comes to a close. The Rangers have won their only league meeting this season, scoring three goals in a span of 64 seconds to win 3-1. The Eagles will be trying to snap Oakville's 15-game Tri-County winning streak and hand the Rangers their first loss since Oct. 5. Other members of the Oakville minor peewee AE Rangers are Cameron Patterson, Scott Armes, Connor Calvert, Samuel Clarke, Tyler Diplock, Torin Hession, Cole Webster, Sujay Sahi, Ben Teague, Patrick Dubreuil, Daniel Munro, Trevor Chau, Jacob Mathers and Joshua Platt. Ryan Bessant and Jason Diplock also coach the Rangers, Suniel Sahi is the trainer and Robert Crawford is the manager. International teams struggle at tourney Norwegians `sixth man' for Rangers The three international teams participating in this year's Bell tournament may have enjoyed plenty of holiday hospitality from their billets, but their on-ice experience was not too pleasant. Sweden's TABY HC '98 and Norway's Manglerud Star were a combined 2-6-1 in minor midget AA play, averaging just over a goal per game offensively. Manglerud opened the tournament with 5-0 losses to Oakville Rangers and Nepean Raiders before rallying to tie Sarnia Sting 5-5 and beat Streetsville Tigers 2-1. TABY lost 4-1 to Brantford 99ers, tied Ancaster Avalanche 1-1, lost 2-1 to Ajax Knights, doubled up West Mall Lightning 4-2 and fell 1-0 to Nepean Raiders. Toensberg, a Norwegian squad, went winless (0-3-1) and was outscored 33-8. The team started with an 8-1 loss to Hamilton Spitfires and a 6-2 loss to Milton Winterhawks, then tied Sarnia Sting 5-5 before being routed 14-0 by Brampton 45's. continued from p.14 their way off the ice by a boisterous Manglerud team. Manglerud players had billeted with Rangers families during the tournament and the teams built a special bond over the four days. "They've been to every game of ours and we've gone to their games to support them. They were like the sixth man," Rees said. "The enthusiasm and energy they have is just solid. If you could bottle that attitude with all teams, they'd just be so successful." "It was a great time. None of us expected that when we met them. We didn't even know if they spoke English," added Gould, a Grade 10 student at St. Thomas Aquinas secondary school. "Their support meant a big deal, and we tried to give it back to them. It was a great experience for everyone." Other members of the Rangers, 13-5-5 in Tri-County Minor Hockey League play this season, are Jack Base, Cameron Clasper, Liam Finkle, Tim Gibson, Kyle Hatherell, Matthew Milford, Jack Modzelewski, Alex Montague, Blake Mueller, Matthew Palucci, Michael Pare, John Rees and Jayden Wiggins.
