Mayor Rob Burton and other Town staff met with the Oakville Beaver at Town Hall to discuss the clean-up efforts and price tag associated with getting Oakville back to normal. "We are at the front end of a very long clean up that we estimate is going to take months," said Burton. The storm wreaked havoc across southern Ontario bringing down power lines, snapping trees and leaving residents sitting in the dark. Oakville Hydro President and CEO Rob Lister said of hydro's 65,000 customers, 45,000 experienced a power outage at some point during the storm. At the peak of the power outages on Dec. 23, some 29,000 customers were without electricity. Fire ghters rushed into the burning home after learning an elderly woman was still inside. Another woman managed to get out safely. Both were taken to Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and treated for smoke inhalation before being released. The Oakville Fire Department was called to the home at 10:30 p.m. when ames were seen in the rear garage of the house. Deputy Fire Chief George Birtig said when re crews arrived, the garage was in ames, the house lled with smoke and the re was spreading. "Our rst-in crews went in and extricated an elderly occupant," said Birtig. "She was on the main oor. She ended up going to hospital for smoke inhalation." It took about 30 minutes for the re ghters to get the blaze under control. Damage to the home is estimated to be at least $200,000. The Ontario Fire Marshal's Of ce is investigating the cause of the re.
