- Theophilus and Anne Norton with their three daughters. Standing left to right are Ida and Erma; Maud is seated between their parents. Theophilus and his daughters were schoolteachers. Theophilus was schoolmaster in Glen Williams for many years.
He was the first teacher at Castlemore School in Peel County. Ann Jane was a student at the school; this is how they met.
Maud taught at S.S. #2, Palermo, around 1905/6. According to her obituary, she also taught in Glen Williams and Gore Bay. Maud was principal of Espanola Public School when when she died suddenly from diptheria. Her sister Ida was working with her at the time.
Ida was born at Glen Williams. She died at Red Deer Hospital, Red Deer, Alberta. Ida was a teacher at many schools until she devoted herself to private tutoring. Ida kept in touch with a Mr. John Wheeler, who was likely from Glen Williams. John Wheeler kept her updated on the happenings at Glen Williams. Family have been told that he inherited Ida's personal belongings when she passed. Ida was very interested in the family history. Some of the past history for the Johnston family has come from letters that Ida wrote.
Erma married Arthur Edward Williams on January 28, 1920 at Calgary. Erma was the only daughter that married. There were no children from this marriage that we know of. Her obituary says she also taught at S.S. #2, Palermo.
Present day family note the family was very close. They were involved in teaching Sunday School and organizations involving the church.
