The vouchers will be available at selected food banks in Halton until Friday or when they run out. "It's meant for those who financially have difficulty replacing the food they lost," said Sheldon Wolfson, Halton's commissioner of social and community services. "We're hop- ing only those people are the ones who come for the cards." Participating food banks in Oakville, include: The Salvation Army Oakville, 1225 Rebecca St. Hours are 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. All food card distribution sites will be provided with a map of areas that experienced power outages greater than 48 hours. Residents must bring documentation to verify their address falls in one of the affected areas in Halton. This could include valid photo identification, a utility bill or third party information that verifies the address. Financial need will be assessed by the Salvation Army locations. Eligible families will receive a $100 grocery gift card, while individuals will receive a $50 card. Cards will be to Metro or Food Basics grocery stores or Shoppers Drug Mart. Wolfson said there will be a Halton Region staff member at each food bank Wednesday to ensure things run smoothly. He encourages residents to check the region's website before heading out to check if a location has run out of cards. The number of gift cards being handed out in Halton was not provided to the Oakville Beaver, but Wolfson did say it was more than the 175 that were reported by a number of different media outlets to have been sent to Waterloo Region. "We received a very limited quantity and because it was so limited, it is likely that sup- ply won't meet demand," he said, adding there has been no indication from the province at this time more will be sent to Halton. According to a press release from the provincial government, $450,000 in grocery store cards will be made available this week in communities that were hard hit by the recent ice storm. The communities receiving gift cards are in: Dufferin County, Durham Region, Halton Region, City of Hamilton, Northumberland County, Peel Region, Waterloo Region, Wellington County and York Region. "I thank all of our donors and our municipal partners for making this initiative, which has already helped thousands of families and individuals, possible," said Madeleine Meilleur, Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services in the release. "The overwhelming response in Toronto and the lessons learned there will help with the distribution in other communities." The province's press release goes on to state the initiative cannot provide grocery store cards to everyone who lost power and is reserved for those facing the most need. As of yesterday afternoon, $842,600 in food grocery cards were distributed to more than 8,500 families and individuals.
