Oakville teams finish first, second and third at Buffalo tournament Canucks in Toronto Feb. 8 If the Gene Harrington Showdown Classic hockey tournament in Buffalo had a podium for top performers, Oakville teams would have owned every spot on it. Minor Oaks Hockey Association house league atom white squads finished first, second and third at the 42nd edition of the annual tournament. The Oakville Vikings claimed the overall title, needing four overtime sudden-death periods to defeat the second-place Oakville Wolves in the final, and the Oakville Rampage was third in the qualifying round. Owen Sandell scored the winner in the championship game, giving the Vikings a 4-3 triumph. "(That) was, from start to finish, a fantastic display of the quality of hockey that Oakville has to offer at every level," said Vikings coach Mike Hackl. After medals were handed out, the Vikings and Wolves gathered at centre ice for a group photo of the two teams. "He's had a tough couple of days. To get rewarded with a goal is pretty exciting." The Beaver's attempts to reach Lain by phone were unsuccessful, but Brett Lain said his younger brother was still upbeat about his first NHL game despite the unfortunate circumstances. "He obviously wasn't expecting (fighting to start the game)... but with how big he is and playing on the fourth line, that's kind of part of the territory," Brett said. "He handled himself really well against (Kevin) Westgarth, one of the heavyweights in the league, and he said it was a cool bonding experience, the five (Canucks) in the penalty box. They were saying `Welcome to the NHL, buddy.' Just a good experience. Not what he expected, but at the same time he's never going to forget it." Neither will Brett, a 27-year-old Mill Street Brewery employee who flew out to Vancouver Friday not even knowing if Kellan would play Saturday. "I figured I'd rather take the chance and fly out there than not take the chance and wait for after the morning skate Saturday to find out. Then it would have been too late for me to get a flight out there," Brett said. "I don't get to see him that often anyway, and one of my best friends lives out there as well, so it wouldn't have been a terrible trip either way. I still got to have dinner with Kellan and to see my best friend, so it was just icing on the cake that (Kellan) was in the lineup as well." The Lains might soon get another chance to see Kellan in action. The Canucks will visit Toronto Saturday, Feb. 8. "I don't know if he'll still be up with the Canucks by then," Brett said, "but if he is, that'll be a huge game for family and friends to go see him close to home." 25 | Thursday, January 23, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Sabatino tournament raises $5K for hospital, local hospice continued from p.24 Peewee red winners included Oakville Blue Steel's Thomas Harding (fastest skater), Oakville Avalanche's Tyler Janovecz (fastest shot), Oakville Chiefs' Jacob Brown (breakaway shooting) and the Blue Steel team (speed relay). Ian Anderson House is an Oakville hospice that offers free and quality end-of-life palliative care to individuals diagnosed with terminal cancer. The donation was made in honour of Simon Bureau, a long-time tournament sponsor through his company KAO Canada Inc.
