THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2012 THE NEW TANNER Councillor Somerville re-elected to FCM Board of Directors Rural Municipalities. The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) is the national voice of Canada's municipalities, speaking for almost 2000 cities and communities representing 90 per cent of Canada's population. Its national Board is comprised of municipal leaders from across Canada, and meets quarterly to set policy priorities. Somerville said he was honoured to have received support from my Rural Colleagues in my re-election. "FCM always tries to have a rural lens on all our work, and I look forward to trying to bring a Halton perspective to the national picture," Somerville said. "The need for all our towns and cities to speak with one voice has never been stronger then what it is now. As Governments balance their books, we have to make sure it is not on the backs of local municipal tax- 13 VETERANS' BUS: Thanks to funding from Royal Canadian Legions across the province, veterans from Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto can travel in style on this bus dubbed the Legionnaire which transported veterans to the Acton Legion for a recent visit. Sharon Graham photo Branch no. 197 Legion news By Sharon Graham P.R.O. On behalf of the Legion, our deepest sympathy and thoughts and prayers are with Tom Grant and family. We are all very sorry to hear that Janet passed away. This has been a bad year for the Branch. We have lost a lot of members. The Masters golf tournament was rained out. The golfers did not seem to mind, as they came back to the Branch and had a steak dinner and then received prizes. They were entertained by Joe Tucker band. They were great. Then the rest of the day was filled with sunshine. Last Sunday we had the veterans visit from Sunnybrook. It was a beautiful day. They got a new bus on Saturday, and our Branch was the very first to see this new bus with all the vets. They were so happy, saying it rides like a charm. They were entertained and then had a great roast beef lunch. They tell us this is the best Legion to come and visit. Last Sunday was a very special day for zone B7. They had a convention in the main hall and were able to come out to greet the vets and also say goodbye. It was the best goodbye you could ever see with all the people all lined up at the end of the driveway. Fall Fair is coming up this weekend. We will be hosting our annual breakfast in the main hall. The doors open at 7 a.m., and breakfast will be served until 11 a.m. For just $6 you get a big breakfast. There will be a bus going from the Legion to the fairgrounds as well during the day. The horseshoe players will be in the park on Saturday afternoon so why not come out and cheer them on? Also on Saturday, there will be entertainment on the patio with Bad Weather from 3 to 8 p.m. All are welcome. Sunday, September 16 the final horseshoe game of the season will be held at the Branch. You are all welcome to come and cheer your favourite player on. For those who are going to march in the parade, it starts sharp at 12 noon, but we ask that you be there by 11:15 a.m. Ladies Auxiliary Notes The September meeting was held with 29 members present. The charter was draped in memory of our dear member May Hoare who had passed away. Thank you to all the Ladies Auxiliary members who helped on Sunday during the Sunnybrook veterans visit at our Branch. Also thank you to the Branch members who came out to help the veterans on and off the bus. Dave and Joan Maloney put gift bags together on behalf of the Branch to give to each veteran and flowers to the ladies. The Ladies Auxiliary President Peggy Harris and Past President Annamarie Lowin, on behalf of the LA, gave each of them a monetary gift. The veterans enjoyed a beautiful roast beef dinner and were so appreciative for everything that was done for them during their visit. Every one who helped had a warm feeling in their heart seeing the smiling faces on the veterans who have fought for our country and given us the freedom we have. Mark your calendar for Zone Convention Sunday, October 14. To all our members who are under the weather or have an illness, our thoughts and prayers are with you. It is with our deepest regret that we have lost another member, Janet Grant, who passed away on Saturday. Janet was a nine-year member of our Auxiliary, and had been the LA Secretary and Funeral Co-ordinator. Janet also did the Blood Clinic for the last few years. To Tom and Janet's girls and family, we extend our deepest sympathy. The next general meeting is Thursday, October 4 at 7:30 p.m. Yours in Comradeship, Peggy Harris President to Branch 197 Acton Ladies Auxiliary Acton Councillor Clark Somerville of FCM's Board of Directors has been re-elected as vicechair of the Rural Forum. The standing committee advises FCM's 75-member Board of Directors on the national issues facing Canada's rural communities. "I am pleased to have Clark play a key role in our team, and I look forward to working together in the year ahead to advance the interest of local governments," said FCM president Karen Leibovici. "Clark has a passion for Rural Canada and has been a strong advocate for it. We have worked well together and I know, with our colleagues in the Rural Forum, we can tackle the challenges we will face in the next year," added newly re-elected Chair David Marit, who is also the President of the Saskatchewan Association of payers," Somerville said. Somerville has served as a Board member for FCM for four years. He is one of 11 elected to serve Ontario. In addition to the Rural Forum, he also serves on the committees dealing with infrastructure, finance and intergovernmental relations. He is also Halton's Chair of Health and Social Services, and sits on a variety of committees both at the Town and Region. FCM's successful advocacy with the federal government has brought significant benefits to Halton and Halton Hills over the past five years. From the GST refund, to the permanent federal gas tax fund, and now the federal government's new, long-term infrastructure plan to build the roads, bridges, water and transportation systems, Canada needs to support its families, businesses, and national economy.
