10 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2012 Rockwood remembers The Glorious Dead The Services of Remembrance at the Rockwood Cenotaph were "better and bigger" this year according to Guelph/Eramosa Township Mayor Chris White. He said for Saturday's service, the large solemn crowd spilled across the highway in front of the 93-year-old Cenotaph, which was recently redicated after being refurbished, including making it fully-accessible. White said without a Royal Canadian Legion Branch to hold a service on November 11, this year the Township hosted services for Rockwood Centennial School, and the public. White said at Friday's school service, 24 Grade seven and eight students , read the 24 names of the Glorious Dead engraved on the Cenotaph. "A couple of students read poems they'd written themselves, and students read In Flanders Fields," White said. At Saturday's service as elderly veterans stood by fresh-faced Red Arrow Squadron Cadets, - the Colour Party, led by Parade Marshall Bill Smith, assembled at the Cenotaph where Master of Ceremonies, Veteran and Rockwood Councillor John Scott, opened the Service, and the Massed Choir from area churches led the crowd in O Canada. As always, music played a large role in the Service from the plaintiff notes of The Last Post and reveille played by bugler Lt. Chris Patterson, to the piper's Lament and the hymns led by the choir. Rockwood Lions Club member Darryl Nichol read the names of the 24 War Dead and local ministers led the crowd in thankful prayers before various groups and individuals laid wreaths and placed poppies on the Cenotaph. The Parade Salute was received by Rockwood Veteran Sytske Drijber, MCpl Sean Summerfield, The Reverend and LCol Robert Lyon, and Mayor White. After the Service, the Guelph/Eramosa Fire Department hosted a reception at St. John's Anglican Church hall. ROCKWOOD REMEMBERS: Veterans and children were among those who marched to the Rockwood Cenotaph for Saturday's Service of Remembrance. Ted Tyler photo `Sad' day at Cenotaph To the Editor, My mom and I recently moved to Rockwood and were quite excited to attend our first Rockwood Remembrance Day Ceremony. To our surprise, the official parade was held on Saturday the 10th, of which we were unaware, but understood, considering the other towns that were attending and participating in the Rockwood ceremony that would be in their own town the following day. What we could not understand was on November 11th at the Rockwood cenotaph, over 50 residents gathered to pay their respects and there was no official presence by anyone in the community or on the council. Thank you to the gentleman, a Rockwood resident of many years, who stood up and led the group in two minutes of silence and then proceeded to read the names of the soldiers of the cenotaph. It is a sad day when representatives of Rockwood do not even show up at their own Cenotaph to lead their residents in the time honoured tradition of a Remembrance Day ceremony.
