Paralympic contender Greg Westlake Greg Westlake will make his third Paralympic appearance when he captains the Canadian sledge hockey team in Sochi in early March. The Paralympic Games will stake out the same venue as the Olympic Games -- Sochi, Russia -- but will take place March 7-16. Canada will compete in all six sports on the program: para-snowboard, para-alpine skiing, para-Nordic skiing, biathlon, sledge hockey and wheelchair curling. The 27-year-old Westlake helped Canada win gold in Turin eight years ago, but he and his teammates are out to erase the memories of a disappointing fourth-place finish at Vancouver 2010. Westlake, whose lower legs were amputated when he was just a few months old, was the MVP and top scorer at last year's World Sledge Hockey Challenge in Toronto, when Canada won gold. · Sledge hockey: Gold medal game is Saturday, Mar. 15 at noon. Olympic celebration is downtown Local residents are being encouraged to get into the Olympic spirit Friday in downtown Oakville. The Downtown Oakville Business Improvement Area (BIA) will host its own opening celebration at Towne Square Friday (Feb. 7) in honour of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games taking place in Sochi Russia from Feb. 7-23. The local event, which takes place between 11 a.m.-2 p.m., off of George Street and Lakeshore Road East, features skating at RBC Skate in the Square, special guests and a few surprises. An RBC tent will be set up during the celebrations with bronze-winning Olympian and community ambassador Mark Oldershaw on hand to meet fans while Leo the Lion will be handing out hot chocolate. Residents will also have a chance to win a signed Steven Stamkos jersey. Stamkos is a Canadian professional ice hockey player for the National Hockey League's Tampa Bay Lightning.
