Investment is securing jobs at Oakville plant continued from p.1 make the plant one of the most competitive and advanced global manufacturing facilities in Canada. When reached for comment at the auto show's media day Thursday, where the Edge Concept was unveiled, Ford Motor Company of Canada President and CEO Dianne Craig said the addition of the vehicle to the assembly plant's lineup goes a long way to securing the plant's future and the jobs of its 2,800 employees. "To be able to announce the new next generation global Edge will be built in Oakville and will ship to 60 countries around the globe, just makes all that we announced back in September even more special," said Craig. "For our reveal here with press... we're going to have the folks from the launch team that work in the Oakville Assembly Plant here to really share in this special day." Craig said the plant has always had a reputation for building quality vehicles with its productive and efficient workforce. She also said a significant amount of retooling will have to take place at the assembly plant to get it ready to produce the Edge Concept, which should start coming off the assembly line later this year. The plant currently manufacturers the Ford Edge and Ford Flex, as well as the Lincoln MKX and Lincoln MKT. "The decision to produce the all-new global Edge in Canada is proof that Canadian manufacturers can compete, and win, globally," said Craig. "We're ready to showcase Oakville Assembly's commitment to craftsmanship and advanced manufacturing to deliver what our global customers want and value -- a high-quality vehicle with class-leading design, fuel efficiency and performance." Craig, who said the vehicle looks `dynamite', also said it is too early to talk about how much it will cost to own. The vehicle competes in the global utility vehicles this year than ever before," said Joe Hinrichs, Ford president of The Americas. "The Oakville facility will offer world-leading flexibility, enabling us to react quickly and efficiently to shifts in consumer demand here in North America and around the globe." Ford is promising to provide customers with more choices in 2014 as it plans an unprecedented product year launching 23 vehicles globally -- 16 in North America, including the new Edge. Visitors to the Canadian International Auto Show will get a glimpse of the new vehicle at the Ford stand, including a preview of automated driving options Ford is developing. These include: fully-assisted parking aid -- automatic parking technology allows for control from inside or outside the vehicle; obstacle avoidance -- automatically steers around an object when the driver does not; if the driver fails to react, the system will automatically steer and brake to avoid a collision; adaptive steering -- the next step in steering technology leads to improvements in both low- and high-speed driving situations. In addition, Ford Edge Concept features fuelsaving technologies such as Active Grille Shutters, Auto Start-Stop and an innovative air curtain, which manages airflow around the front wheels to enhance aerodynamic efficiency.
