Officials want residents to get the right information by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 9 | Friday, February 21, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com As Canada Post prepares to end door-to-door delivery for 26,400 Oakville addresses in the fall of 2014 -- local politicians are working to ensure residents have the right information. The service is being replaced with community mailboxes as part of a nationwide initiative that is intended to save the Crown corporation $400 million-$500 million per year. In a statement issued Wednesday, Oakville Mayor Rob Burton stated Canada's federal government has exclusive jurisdiction over Canada Post's mail and its delivery. He said in this particular case Canada Post also has a right to the public road allowance meaning they get to decide where the community mailboxes go. "Over the next few months, Canada Post has said it will consult with the Town's Planning Department to determine the most suitable locations for community mailboxes," said Burton. "Although we have no say over Canada Post's decision to discontinue door-to-door mail delivery, we will seek to work with them to help minimize the disruption to our community as this initiative is implemented." Burton said he expects there to be more than 500 of these new community mailboxes installed in Oakville. He noted officials at Canada Post told him they want to have all of these mailboxes in place by the end of October. "It's going to be interesting to see if they can achieve that level of productivity because that is like more than five per day," said Burton. Burton called on residents living south of Upper Middle Road with questions about the switch to community mailboxes to contact Oakville MP Terence Young at terence.young@ parl.gc.ca. see Postal on p.10 JOIN US MARCH BREAK CAMPS for our HSC IS A FAMILY SCHOOL.
