Sept. 22 may soon become William Halton Day The man for whom Halton Region was named, Major William Halton, may soon have a day set aside to celebrate his achievements. Halton MPP Ted Chudleigh's Private Member's Bill 142, an act to proclaim Major William Halton Day, passed second reading as all three parties in the Legislature voted to support its passage into law Feb. 20. Members from the three Caucuses praised Chudleigh's initiative in bringing forward his bill that would establish Sept. 22 as Major William Halton Day every year in Ontario. The day would celebrate the life and service of William Halton to the Province of Upper Canada, which led to Halton County, the forerunner of Halton Region, named after him in 1816. During his remarks in the House, Chudleigh related the highlights of Halton's life and achievements, emphasizing his dedication to public service in the settlement of Upper Canada and his humanitarian concern for the welfare of the veterans of the War of 1812 and their families. "Halton deserves this recognition from the Province for his hard work as private secretary of Lieutenant Governor Sir Francis Gore," Chudleigh said. "He went beyond the call of duty in serving the early settlers and communities of what was to become the Province of Ontario. "Thanks to Halton's broad vision and inclusive perspectives, Halton County was founded on the principles he embodied, which are the very principles that we hold dear as Ontarians and Canadians. He truly is Halton Region's Founding Father." Bill 142 has now been referred to the Legislature's Social Policy Committee before being sent back to the Legislature for third and final reading. If approved it would allow the Region to begin preparations to celebrate Halton's founder on the 200th anniversary of the naming of the region after him. 11 | Friday, February 28, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com JOIN US MARCH BREAK CAMPS for our Robbery suspect sought by police continued from p.1 A few hours later, a man turned himself in at the Oakville police station.
