- Description
- The front cover is missing from this linen book for children published in 1895 but the title is, "The ABC of Animals". A few pages as well as the back cover are shown. This paper book was owned by the Smith family who settled and farmed Lot 34, Con 1 SDS (near Palermo) in the 1800's through to the early 1970's when the farm was expropriated for Bronte Provincial Creek Park.
The back cover shows the extensive publishing done by McLaughlin Bros. By 1870, this publisher had the largest colour printing factory in the United States. Because there was no copyright and because the Civil War meant that trade with Great Britain was curtailed, the publisher freely copied many British books and illustrations, and this publisher thrived with little competition from overseas.
