Description
The Smiths left New Jersey as United Empire Loyalists settling in the Niagara/Grimsby area by 1787. John Durlin Smith was given the 200 acre farm on Lot 34, Con. 1, SDS by his father, Isaac Smith, who remained in Grimsby Township. John D. Smith and his new wife, Margaret, received title to the farm in 1831. Their son, John Walker, was born August 31, 1854. Walker married Keturah Margaret Inglehart on October 26, 1881.

The older son of Walker and Keturah was Art, born on December 6, 1883. His younger brother, John Russell, was born May 10, 1888. There is no death date for John Russell, but he married Bessie Catherine Johnson (a legal document shows her legal given name as “Bessie”) and in 1920, John (Russell) sold his half of the family farm which he had been given by his father in 1918, to his brother, Arthur (Albert), who farmed the original 200 acres from then on.

Art married Mabel Bridgeman and their son was Reginald, their adopted daughter, Gwen. The children attended the one-room school at Palermo.
Notes
There is no notation as to the people in this photograph nor is a date provided but the man with the full beard standing is John Durlin (Dorland) Smith as we have another photograph for comparison. Margaret, his wife, is likely sitting in front of him and the older woman in the chair may be John's mother. The photograph is taken in front of the house on Lot 34, Con. 1 SDS
