By Julie Conroy The computer course on Tuesday, January 29 will teach you how to create and send files or attachments to someone via e-mail, also which files to stay away from, such as system files, or moving or disturbing important files. This can cause a great deal of harm to your computer. Making back up files of documents will also be covered. You can bring your own laptop or use one of the Centre's. If you want a little practice and don't own a computer or laptop you can use the Centre's laptops any day. You just need to sign it out at the front desk. Eighty-four people attended the social dinner celebrating a belated New Year on Tuesday, January 15. Everyone enjoyed the Sheppard's Pie and salad followed by lemon mer- Comrades, This week has been very cold. It is time to bundle up and say warm. The news said this week will be the coldest weather in two years. If you have pets do not leave them out for too long. Last Sunday was our awards for the Poppy poster and literary contest. I would like to thank all of the principals, teachers, parents and especially the students on a job well done. Everyone was so proud to receive their envelope and certificate plus a few ribbons. I would also like to thank the entire executive that came out to help give out the awards. Thank you also goes out to the cooks. The meal was great. The kids really enjoyed it. It was so nice to see the parents surprised to see what the students have done for the veterans. These students are our future as our veterans are getting fewer and fewer. I would also like to thank some students from Robert Little who wrote letters to the veterans of the Branch. Our veterans enjoyed reading them. We have a few veterans who will go to Robert Little to speak to the students in person. St. Joseph's school are writing Valentines letters to the veterans at Sunnybrook. I know that they will really enjoy hearing from them. To all of the students keep up the good work. We all look forward to working with you next year. This Friday evening is entertainment with Ronnie and the Corvairs so put on your dancing shoes and come out for an evening of dance from 7 to 11 p.m. Everyone is welcome. It looks like we might have some snow for our winter horse shoes on February 3. You just can't play shoes without a bit of snow. Remember if you have nothing planned come out and cheer them on. It will be a great day of fun. Our winter fun day for the family will be coming up on February 17. This is always a great day filled with fun and games for all of the family. I will keep you posted on all of the events. Just a reminder that our Zone Winter Social will be held this year at Branch 136, Milton on February 24. The theme is Mardi Gras. So get out your mask and costume. The fun starts at 1 and will go to 7 p.m. The signup sheet is on the bulletin board for a bus. If you are interested please sign up. The 50/50 was won by Linda Vanderlaan and door prizes went home with Shirley McLean, Sue Vallance, Lorrie Ryan-Lewis, Caroline Rutherford, Willie Vermeulen, Jill Tetreault, and Joan Blight, and I was lucky enough to win one too. At Thursday afternoon Bid Euchre Shirley Hunter had the only mooner. Lunch on Friday, February 1, will be hearty country vegetable soup, plus a variety of sandwiches and dessert ­ a perfect meal for a cold winter day. There will be a meeting on Wednesday, February 6 at 3 p.m., in the Acton Community Hall for all members of the Acton Seniors Recreation Centre. This meeting is to give information on the buy/ lease/partnership initiative for our future Centre. Thank you everyone who donated their pennies to the Centre over the past few months. After they were rolled, we banked $63. It's amazing how the pennies mount up. If you are a crafty person, we are planning a trip to Mary Maxim's in April. If you haven't heard of Mary Maxim's, it is a huge craft and gift store in Paris. They sent us some catalogues. If you are interested, you can pick one up or browse through it when visiting the Centre. The cost will depend on how many people wish to go. Flora Barber was happy to hear she had won the weekly 50/50 last Friday. She won $74. Rebate for some Halton charities Registered charities that own or rent commercial or industrial property in Halton Region may be eligible for the Charity Tax Rebate program. The program, administered by the local municipalities, provides a tax rebate of 40 per cent of the property taxes paid by local charities. The deadline to apply for the rebate is February 28. "I would encourage charities in our community to take advantage of the Charity Tax Rebate program," said Regional Chair Gary Carr. "Regional Council acknowledges the important work done by charitable organizations throughout Halton." To be eligible for the rebate, charities must have a valid registration number issued by the Canada Revenue Agency, must rent or own a commercial or industrial property in Halton, and be able to verify the amount of property taxes paid. Interested charitable organizations should contact their local municipal tax office to determine eligibility. There is no cost to apply for this rebate. Applications must be made annually and received between January 1 of the taxation year and no later than the last day of February of the following taxation year for which the charity rebate is being requested. For example an application for the 2012 tax year must be received between January 1, 2012 and February 28, 2013.
