Two continuing trends worth highlighting include: Emergency scams This scenario preys on the emotions of the elderly who get a phone call from an individual purporting to be their grandchild and in some form of distress. The reason varies and could include being involved in a car accident or requiring money for bail. The caller will elicit pertinent personal information from the unsuspecting victim who will eventually be asked to wire money through a money transfer company. Internet scams Malicious software ­ Victims get a call from an individual said to represent a software firm. The individual will attempt to have their software installed on your computer so access can be gained to files, personal banking records and passwords. Phishing ­ This scam solely involves getting the victim to hand over their personal and banking details. The email sent may well appear authentic, however genuine government organizations and financial institutions would never expect you to send your personal information in such a format. From the maple syrup, to the braised beef, to sweet chili heat ­ there were some interesting flavours for judges to taste from the five entrants in the second annual chili cook-off on Sunday at the Acton BIA winter carnival. The savoury chili ­ dubbed Sweet Heat ­ from Tanners Pub and Grill earned top marks from judges Gerri Kentner and Lori Geysel. Tanners owner Andrea Clark said the chili would be on special all this week at the Acton restaurant. The tasty chili entered by Angela Tremblay of Angie's Kitchen earned second place from the judges, and also won the People's Choice award in voting ­ Tremblay refused to divulge the three "secret spices" that made her dish the clear crowd favourite among the entries. The chili entered by Roxy Coffee ­ the winner last year ­ placed third. Food played a large role in Sunday's carnival fun at the Acton Town Hall Centre. Earlier in the day, parents of Acton Air Cadets hosted a pancake breakfast ­ serving 132 people who enjoyed the sausage, flapjacks and strong coffee to kick off the day's festivities. There were also some very happy prize winners at the carnival's closing ceremonies ­ BIA manager Josey Bonnette won $107 in a 50/50 draw, and Mayor Rick Bonnette's skill at frozen mini-putt won him 10 golf passes on the nine-hole course at Blue Springs and an eye glasses care kit.
