SOAAR, which stands for Successful Options for Adults with Autism Re-envisioned, invited the community to learn more about the program and celebrate its official launch last week at the Church of the Epiphany, 141 Bronte Rd. "Everyone's life quality is dependent upon having meaningful things to do. Unfortunately, many adults and adolescents with autism and other developmental disabilities do not have such opportunities," said a news release. "Enriched activities and relationships provide young adults with developmental disabilities a context to build independence and engage with others in the community." Founded in 2013 and run under the clinical supervision of the Toronto-based Behaviour Institute, services associated with the day program are goal-directed, evaluated and built on principles of applied behaviour analysis, stated the release. The program runs Monday-Friday, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and is also available on a part-time basis. Each day is organized with two outings and two teaching periods, which revolve around topics such as conversational training, how to use electronic tablets to communicate, and how to prepare a meal, among others.
