www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, March 13, 2014 | 10 T Travelling with Wes Anderson to Budapest in the 1930s omorrow, we will venture out. We will gather in lobbies, purchase over-buttered popcorn and oversized sodas, then ease into the enveloping darkness, take a seat and time travel. Back to Budapest in the 1930s. Yes, lovers of Wes Anderson movies, the time has nally come. After being teased by trailers that surfaced eons ago on the Internet, the divisive director's latest creation hits the big screen in widerelease tomorrow. The Budapest Hotel. Be still your beating hearts. Admittedly, the works of Wes are not for everyone (hence the `divisive director' description). They're not for people who want R0012448869 their movies to unfold at warp speed. They're not for those who crave car chases and things randomly blowing up amid, say, gads of gratuitous garroting and superuous sexcapades. And they're certainly not for anyone reluctant to actually think during a movie, or for those impervious to things like nuance, crisp dialogue, fully-realized characters, and the belief that good lmmaking is in the details. Finally, Anderson's movies are strict no-goes for anyone who does not like a movie adorned with a heaping helping of quirk. `King of Quirk' Anderson is the undisputed King of Quirk. Now, everybody wants to love the quirky -- no one wants to think of themselves as mundane mainstream -- but not everyone can go as far as the king. As Stephanie Zacharek wrote in The Village Voice: "The number (of moviegoers) who want to love Wes Anderson's work is greater than the number who actually do... Anderson makes some moviegoers swoon and others groan." Zacharek says she yearns to be an Anderson a cionado, but always nds herself (or his movies) coming up short. I can relate, in small part. An Anderson lover I love Wes Anderson. I think he's the John Irving (circa. The World According to Garp) of lmmaking. I thought his rst movie, Bottle Rocket, was wonderful. His next two efforts, Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums, restored my love of movies, earned spots in my top 25 movies of all-time and, more importantly, revived the career of Bill Murray, putting him on his current path to divinity (alas, I may be understating). So, yeah, I was a devotee by that point. But then came The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou and The Darjeeling Limited, both of which were big time stinkers. Now, I've had close (and heated) encounters with assorted Wes Anderson zealots who contend I'm cuckoo-bananas to dismiss those two movies, that they are in fact classics. It's possible, I suppose, that they are decent icks and that Mr. Anderson simply out-quirked me. And my faithfulness was repaid in full, and then some, with his next movie, Moonrise Kingdom. It wowed me with its earnestness and its awesomeness. All of which brings me to tomorrow. Waiting with bated and buttered breath between all the Anderson fanatics and all those still wishing to be won over by the divisive director's latest (and, if critics are to be believed, possibly his greatest) lm -- The Budapest Hotel.
