Minor peewees lost just once in SCTA play this season continued from p.26 intact next season, when it will be known as peewee AAA 1. The Rangers will have a tough act to follow as they look to build on a stellar 201314 campaign that saw them nearly run the table in South-Central Triple A play (a loss to Buffalo in February was the Rangers' only blemish in a 34-1-4 season), defeat the Toronto Marlies in the final of December's Richard Bell Memorial tournament and go undefeated at the OMHA championships. Oakville posted three wins and a tie at last weekend's tournament before the victory over York-Simcoe. "It's a very rewarding way to finish the year, a real testament to the boys and all the hard work they did this year and how they bought into what the coaches were teaching them," Luik said. "You also have to credit the coaching staff we have. We brought in three non-parent coaches this year -- Sean Carter, Aaron Jarc and Glen MacDonald -- and they just really added to the depth of the coaching." Luik, who has been the Rangers' head coach since they were tykes, will move down to the minor atom AAA level next year. But he still intends to remain involved with the team in what could be its biggest season yet. The Rangers will host the 2015 OMHA tournament, could potentially also host the Ontario Hockey Federation provincial championships, and appear likely to receive an invitation to the prestigious Quebec International Peewee Hockey Tournament. Tanner Kelly (two), Matthew Thompson, Luke Evangelista and Jacob Murray had Oakville's goals in Sunday's title clincher. The Rangers' Cameron Tolnai led all scorers in the tournament with 11 points (including seven goals), while Murray had a competition-high seven assists. Zach Terry and Ryan Brown also scored goals at OMHAs, and Hayden Williamson and Davis Tolnai each recorded two victories in net. Other members of the team are Ethan Ritchie, Owen Sage, Nathan Ribau, Christian Pelley, Dante Parisotto, Cameron Garvey, Robert Strachan and Owen Luik. Midgets reach fifth final in six years The midget AAA Rangers nearly joined the minor peewees as OMHA champions, reaching the final of their tournament before dropping a 6-1 decision to the AjaxPickering Raiders in Sunday's title game at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex. Oakville posted two wins and two ties earlier in the competition, including a 4-4 draw with Ajax-Pickering in round-robin action. "I think the whole pressure of the moment got to (our players)," Rangers head coach Mike Daley said of the gold-medal game. "And as coaches, we probably didn't do enough to calm them down." 27 | Wednesday, March 19, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The Oakville minor peewee AAA Rangers won their third Ontario Minor Hockey Association championship in four years Sunday. | photo submitted Oakville was seeking its fourth OMHA midget AAA title in six years, having won three straight championships from 2009-11. The Rangers were also runners-up last year. "It's as much luck as management to win OMHAs," Daley said, referring to the tournament-style playoff format at the AAA level. "We got lucky three years in a row. "We've created a program where kids are having fun, moving on and being success- ful," he added. "It's just bred talent on our rosters." Matt Luff led the Rangers offensively throughout the tournament, including a four-goal outing in a 4-1 win over the Markham Waxers. Jack Jeffers, Cole Buchan, Colt Jaime, Ryan Takamatsu, Brayden Sampson, Jackson Bales, Jake Smyth, Michael Choma and Jack Degen also scored at least one goal each during the event.
