Toronto-based, not-for-profit organization Oral Health, Total Health (OHTH) is hosting the sixth annual Sharing Smiles Day in Oakville March 22 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to bring together community members, dentists and researchers to break down attitudinal barriers between dental students and persons with special needs. The event, held at Le Dome Banquet Hall (1173 North Service Rd. E.), will feature an interactive oral hygiene demonstration for the participants following games and a luncheon. There will also be speeches by special guests. For the past 30 years, oral health has remained one of the top health needs facing persons with special needs, according to OHTH's website. People with disabilities also experience a greater load of oral disease, including cavities and gum disease than the general population. "Ensuring access to dental care for persons with disabilities not only helps their oral health but their overall, quality of life," said Dr. Ali Sigal, the founder of the OHTH. The event also aims to connect the next generation of dental and dental hygiene students to people with special needs to build positive relationships and help the students gain comfort, confidence and familiarity with their unique needs. OHTH aims to advocate, educate and improve oral healthcare for those with special needs. It was founded by University of Toronto dental students, and has expanded to other dental schools in Canada.
