Town salutes Afghanistan veterans Oakville Town council will be honouring Oakville members of the Canadian Forces who served in Afghanistan with a special moment-of-silence ceremony taking place at its next meeting Monday, March 31 at 7 p.m. Officials from Royal Canadian Legion Branches 114 and 486 and ranking Afghanistan veteran Lt. Col. Guy Smith will be receiving the honour on behalf of their returning and fallen comrades. The last 94 Canadian soldiers who served in Afghanistan returned home to their loved ones Tuesday. The 160 William St. church will donate proceeds from its 2014 Songs and Prayers for the Earth concert to the Halton Environmental Network, a non-profit organization focused on environmental sustainability in the region. Timed to coincide with Earth Hour, the concert starts at 8:15 p.m. with the lights dimming at 8:30 p.m. and continuing by candlelight. Mississauga's Cawthra Park Chamber Choir (CPCC) will headline this year with its third appearance at the concert. "Last season, the versatile high school students of CPCC backed up the Rolling Stones and next season they will sing with the Toronto Symphony," stated a press release. Other guests to the concert include: Ethereal Invention, that will perform Earth Child, songs designed to raise awareness of bullying; cellist Janko Marjanovic, who will play the music of J.S. Bach; a brass quintet led by trumpeter Susan Barber Kahro, who will perform music by Giovanni Gabrieli from St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice; and St. Jude's music director Simon Walker, who will feature pieces by French organist Louis Vierne. Since its inception seven years ago, Earth Hour has grown into a global movement to raise awareness of the importance of preserving Earth's environment, while the annual concert at St. Jude's has drawn large audiences of people who can spend the hour sharing the experience of music and song while assisting a local environmental group.
