www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, March 21, 2014 | 4 Residents resist development on Merton Lands continued from p.1 the lands that has been designated by Halton Region, is proposed to be maintained and protected while many existing uses are proposed to be retained, including Deerfield Golf Club. "You'll see there's a percentage of land that is actually less than 20 per cent that is recommended for community development in the form of residential uses," she said. Under the Livable Oakville Plan, the lands are identified as a Special Policy Area for potential future development and directs the area be studied to determine what type of development would be best and where. Town staff has studied the area over 16 months to arrive, with input from residents, at several options. The preferred route presented Wednesday notes Town Council's request to the Province last month to have the public land near Fourteen Mile Creek, between Upper Middle Road and the QEW, added to the Ontario Greenbelt. It also outlines the privately-owned Saw Whet lands, in the northern section of the study, as a potential area for low and medium density residential with a main gateway off Bronte Road that would allow commercial and office uses on the ground floor and residential above in buildings with a maximum height of four storeys. The area would have an urban design with buildings like townhouses facing Bronte Road, an elementary school site and a neighbourhood park and two parkettes, said Kirk Biggar, the Town's senior long range planner. A portion of the lands near Upper Middle Road West would permit a small-scale retail plaza, he added. Other policies include maintaining and preserving the area's cultural heritage, creating bike routes, trails and other pedestrian connections and designating some lands as sensitive, especially around Halton's wastewater treatment plant and the Woodlands Operation Centre. Residents expressed fear and frustration for the future. Some said everything should be kept intact the way it is rather than risk the stability and health of Fourteen Mile Creek and the green space that surrounds it. see Residents on p.11 A map of the Draft Preferred Plan for the Merton lands. | Town of Oakville Go Green...
