Last week, Oakville's Planning and Development Council supported rezoning the land to allow developer New Horizon Group (Bronte) Inc. to build a mixed-use development on the west side of Old Bronte Road, just south of Dundas Street West. Staff told councillors in keeping with the cultural heritage of Palermo Village, the old vernacular brick house would be conserved, enhanced and integrated into the proposed development. It would be relocated on the property closer to Old Bronte Road to be more visible, said staff. However, a structural analysis of the adjacent barn found it was unsafe and is an immediate danger to public safety, according to the related Town of Oakville staff report. New Horizon Group plans to remove the barn, but is offering a site visit to local historical societies to peruse the barn and keep any artifacts they may want. Speaking on behalf of New Horizon Group, GSP Group Inc. Planner Caroline Baker added her client is committed to reusing the barn materials in the new proposed building, and also on a potential gazebo structure on the property. "When Memorial Hall was removed for the new Bronte Road there was a commitment to build a gazebo to commemorate the loss of that building and I understand it hasn't been constructed as of yet and the owner would be more than willing to construct it on this property adjacent to the relocated heritage house," she said. Baker added the owner is working on donating the barn boards to a barn further to the north that has suffered damage over the winter.
