continued from p.7 Munson said she's humbled by the recognition, which caught her off guard, as she helped 25 of her Grades 7 and 8 students prepare for the science fair that began Wednesday at Hamilton's Mohawk College and wraps up tomorrow (Saturday). "It's an honour," said Munson, adding the award means a lot because former students and parents nominated her. "It is nice to be recognized for all the hard work and hours that have gone into the kids," she said. Oakville parent Cathy Hayman, who helped nominate Munson, said the educator has a natu- Students should be proud of their science fair efforts: Munson ral ability to teach science in a way that makes it interesting for all children. Years ago, when her son, Tyler Collins, was in Munson's class, she said he often came home expressing how much he loved the way she taught the subject. Even though he is now studying drama at university, Hayman said her son still has fond memories, while other students she has happened to keep in touch with have gone on to excel in science and engineering. "The spark she ignited has fanned into flames so that's what makes her a champion," she said. Munson said it's rewarding to see other teachers at her former schools continue helping students submit science fair work and seeing her former students excel in science and engineering. Munson said students are learning life skills, such as public speaking, critical thinking and time management that will remain with them throughout their lives. Regardless of how well each student does, she added, they all should be proud of their effort. This year's science fair is in its 54th year.
