www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, March 28, 2014 | 18 Improved atom Vytis squad captures OBA Division 4 title By Herb Garbutt Oakville Beaver staff Nina Mueller knew she had an athletic team. What her Oakville Vytis atom players -- many of them coming from a soccer background -- lacked in basketball experience, they made up for in their ability to run for miles. They took their lumps against some Division 1 teams early in the season, but over the course of the season, the basketball sense and skills began to catch up. "They improved immensely," Mueller said. "They learned so much. Playing the Division 1 teams, they learned the pace they had to play. They gained confidence and by the final they were making plays, they were passing to a cutter. How much they were able to pick up in one season was amazing." Their season culminated on the weekend with a 26-14 victory over Toronto Triple Threat to win the Ontario Basketball Association atom girls' Division 4 championship. Oakville jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the opening quarter and were not challenged the rest of the way. Julia Cipriano led Vytis with eight points while Madison Anson had five. Oakville's biggest challenge to the title actually came in the semifinals where it held off a fourth-quarter rally by Mississauga to win 30-29. Vytis took a 14-11 advantage into the half, with the difference The Oakville atom Vytis won the Ontario Basketball Association Division 4 championship. "She's a good shooter," Mueller said, before adding with a laugh. "Had anyone else taken one, I probably would have been freaking out." Oakville extended its lead in the third quarter but Mississauga roared back. It was within three with 30 seconds remaining and with no timeouts allowed in atom basketball, Mueller said Oakville caught a break when the game was paused to sort out an issue at the scorer's table. The coach was able to settle her players and Lauren Service and Faith Nevado, who led Oakville with nine points, controlled the ball to run down the clock. Though Mississauga cut the lead to one in the final seconds, it came up a point short. Anton had six points for Vytis. Oakville opened the tournament with a 35-18 win over Wallaceburg, paced by Cipriano and Anton with eight apiece. Faith Munro had seven points as Oakville followed up with a narrow 22-18 victory over Flamborough. The Oakville Vytis atom team competing in Division 1 went 2-2 at the Ontario Basketball Association championships to earn a seventh-place finish. Oakville entered the tournament as the eighth seed but opened with an upset of No. 3 Stoney Creek as Abbey Kanalec hit the game-winning shot with seven seconds to play. The victory moved Vytis into the quarter-finals where it faced the eventual silver medallists from Kitchener/Waterloo, which emerged with a 30-17 victory. Oakville lost a heartbreaker in the consolation semifinals, falling 25-23 to North Toronto. Facing Stoney Creek again in the seventh-place game, Oakville again pulled out a tight 21-19 win. This time it was Katie Hartman providing the winning basket with 40 seconds remaining. Other members of the Oakville team are Chiara English, Madeline McWilliam, Jessica Dougall, Isabella Boyd, Gillian Rodriguez Lee, Hannah James, Victoria DaSilva, Helena Lasic, Ashley Elliott, Madison Tu and coach Alana Juzenas.
