"I'm finally using language my family and friends can understand," jokes the 30-year-old Oakville resident, who, over the last few years, has starred in community theatre productions of William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice and Much Ado About Nothing, William Wycherley's The Country Wife and John Webster's The Duchess of Malfi in Hamilton, Windsor and London, Ont. Langton plays writer Joel Harper in the comedy set to take the stage April 9-13 at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts. The play centres around his misfortunes as he deals with not only writer's block, but also a marriage on the rocks, a tax collector and a mortgage foreclosure. Forced to sell the family home quickly, Joel enlists the help of a local Realtor who decides that both the house and its owner are "fixer-uppers" in need of tender, loving care. As everything comes to a head, Langton, who grew up in Waterdown, said hilarity and insanity ensues for the next two hours. Langton added his character is one he can easily relate to. Noting how he was stuck in a rut a few years ago after leaving his PhD studies in English Literature at Western University, Langton said he drew on that experience to portray Joel. "I remember those days when it was a little bit harder to get out of bed and a little bit harder to get on your feet," he said. But while Joel is certainly depressed and "drags his feet a bit," he describes the character as a storyteller with a playful wit. Langton hopes residents will drop by to experience the show, his first in the Oakville community. Noting how it's "way more fun than going to the movies," he described how the relationship between actors and the audience and the engagement and intimacy that goes along with it is something you can't get through any screen media. The play also features Kristen Horner da Silva as Emma, Jennifer Thompson as Estelle and Damian Williams as Ted.
