"When it comes to chemical synthesis-type labs, methamphetamine and so forth, there are a lot of volatile substances and toxins that are used in those processes," said Insp. Roger Wilkie, Halton police. "If you don't have a proper environment for that, in terms of ventilation, or if you have external heat sources that could ignite these products, there is obviously concern for explosion or contamination." Residents evacuated from the apartments were moved to nearby Oakville Transit buses so they could keep warm as the investigation continued. Wilkie said the Oakville Fire Department sent in a Hazmat team, ventilated the unit and, with the help of police, determined the alleged drug lab was non-operational and had been shut down recently. After about an hour, police and fire officials deemed there was no threat to public safety and the residents were allowed to return home. However, no one immediately returned to the 12th-storey unit, which remained under police guard. After obtaining a search warrant, police and a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police's Clandestine Lab Team dismantled what was believed to be laboratory and seized samples of substances discovered there. The samples were sent to Health Canada for testing. "We are actively investigating and, upon completion of this part of the investigation for the public safety piece, we will be pursuing... drug manufacturing charges," said Wilkie. Monday night a resident of the apartment unit returned home, was questioned by police and released unconditionally. The case is still under investigation by the Integrated Drugs, Guns and Gangs Unit of the Halton police. The sudden arrival of police and fire department vehicles on the scene caught many of the apartment building's residents by surprise. One resident, who would not give his name, said he came home to find 12 police officers standing in front of the building. "I asked people what was going on and then they just evacuated everybody from the 10th floor and up," he said. "This is the first (time) I've seen this many police around here."
