www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, April 10, 2014 | 8 Firepits deserve a second look Residents with outdoor fireplaces or pits may want to take a second look at the Town of Oakville bylaw that regulates open air burning in town. An amendment to the rules got a green light at Oakville Town council last week in the hope of answering issues raised about smoke. The Oakville Fire Department can now step in to address reports from residents of "significant smoke or odour from recreational fires," according to the amended bylaw. Smoke could be deemed a "public nuisance" if it is "creating negative health effects on neighbouring residents, infringing on the enjoyment of the use of neighbouring properties or generating false fire alarms," the bylaw states. The issue came to light last year when the Town received public complaints regarding excessive wood smoke from an outdoor fireplace located on a private property in north Oakville. A Town staff report revealed smoke from a fireplace was causing concern to a resident in the area. On July 8, 2013, council directed staff to report back on options to either increase the setback requirements under the open burning bylaw or ban open air burning in urban areas.
