"Y Making the trek into Toronto to see a timeless troubadour That's Life Andy Juniper Guest Contributor 13 | Thursday, April 10, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com ou'll never see the end of the road when you're travelling with me." Turns out, we could have taken him at his word. It's been nearly 30 years since Neil Finn rst sang that lyrical line from what became his band's breakout hit and his signature song. And, as predicted, as promised, we've never seen the end of the road while traveling with him. Last Saturday night, my wife and I made the trek into Toronto to see Finn, the timeless troubadour, onetime key cog in Split Enz -- the New Zealand band with a cult following and infectious fare like I Got You and Six Months In A Leaky Boat -- and leader of Crowded House whose chart-topping tunes include Fall At Your Feet, Distant Sun, and Don't Dream It's Over, the classic that includes the aforementioned lyric. Honestly, we didn't know what to expect. Over the years we've seen Crowded House in concert several times and were wholly entertained by the banter between bandmates and duly wowed by their music. But this was Neil without the band, touring in support of Dizzy Heights, his third solo album and rst in 13 years. In case you didn't run out and buy it upon its release last month, be forewarned: Dizzy Heights is not the easiest Neil Finn album to wrap your head around. However, it may well be the most rewarding. For sure it contains some pure-pop gems and all the usual Finn-ish hooks and dreamy melodies, but as critics have expounded: it's an eclectic and experimental venture that takes repeated listens before full rewards are reaped. In the music industry, Finn is known as a musician's musician, and this album is the work of a songwriter too curious and too adventurous to simply churn out the same song over and over. Thankfully for fans, Finn has always been an artist eager to expand his musical horizons. On Dizzy Heights, one critic suggests he's a songwriter "concerned with making an arty, see Finn on p.14 through healthy hearing!
