www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, April 10, 2014 | 4 Halton police say they are not soliciting donations by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff Halton police advise people to beware of telephone scam artists masquerading as local police. Residents have been receiving phone calls from people identifying themselves as members of the police service, stating they are fundraising for an anti-bullying campaign, police said. The fraudster asks for donations ranging from $1 to $2,000 and demands a credit card number. Police said they do not solicit the public for monetary donations of any kind and do not endorse collection of donations related to one specific campaign or charity on their behalf. Providing personal, credit card or banking information to unknown sources exposes a person to potential financial loss and identity theft. To safeguard against becoming a victim of a false charity scam, police recommend the following precautions: · Be wary of appeals that "tug at one's heart strings," especially pleas involving current events · Call the charity. Find out if the organization is aware of the solicitation and has authorized use of its name · Check the charity's financial information. For many organizations, this information is online · Ask the solicitor for the registered charitable tax number of the charity. Question discrepancies. Confirm the charity's registration information through the Canada Revenue Agency (1-800-267-2384) · Refuse high-pressure appeals. Legitimate fundraisers won't push you to donate on the spot Anyone with information on this crime can contact Halton Police Fraud Investigators at 905-8254747, ext. 8739 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-8477 (TIPS), through the web at www.haltoncrimestoppers.com or by texting "Tip201" with a message to 274637 (crimes).
