Luminaries will return to the Canadian Cancer Society's (CCS) Relay for Life this year to provide hope and inspiration for those taking part in the annual non-competitive relay event that sees teams of 10-15 cancer survivors and fighters take turns walking or running around a track to raise much-needed funds to support cancer research. A new Halton relay event is at Oakville's Appleby College May 30, from 7 p.m.-midnight, followed by the Burlington event at Bronte Creek Provincial Park, June 6, from 7 p.m.-7 a.m., the Milton Fairgrounds in Milton on June 13, from 7 p.m.-7 a.m., and the Oakville event at St. Peter and Paul Parish from 7 p.m.-7 a.m. Luminaries cost $5 and can be purchased through the CCS office at 760 Pacific Rd., Oakville, online at relayforlife.ca or at the event. Lit during a twilight ceremony, the luminaries are special fireproof paper bags filled with sand and a candle that illuminate the track. Each bears the name of someone who has won or lost their battle with cancer or carries a meaningful message meant to inspire those at the event. The lighting ceremony is often powerful and emotional and allows participants a time to reflect, remember and honour cancer survivors and the memory of loved ones lost to cancer. Residents who purchase a luminary are encouraged to light it themselves. Today, more than 62 per cent of Canadians diagnosed with cancer will survive compared to about 25 per cent in the 1940s, according to figures from the Canadian Cancer Society.
