The fire was one of four that occurred in a 24-hour period last weekend in the west end of town. | photos by Brandon Vukovich special to the Beaver Fire crews kept busy last weekend with four west-end blazes continued from p.1 The cause has yet to be determined, but Glynn said the blaze started in the basement near an electrical saw. Damage is estimated at $1,000. A second fire broke out at a home on Lakeshore Road West, near Mississaga Street, Saturday night around 11 p.m. Firefighters arrived to find a garage engulfed in flames with smoke and fire spreading to the rest of the home. Three people inside were able to escape and called 911. One suffered minor injuries and was taken to OTMH as a precaution. Firefighters were able to douse the flames within an hour, but it caused approximately $100,000 in damage to the dwelling. "There was some fire and heavy smoke damage throughout the home, primarily contained to the garage area," said Glynn. "We can confirm the fire did start in the garage." The cause is under investigation. Glynn said fire crews arrived on the scene quickly because they were already in the area dealing with an oven fire at a Mississaga Street home. "They basically just had to go around the corner," said the deputy chief. Firefighters were back on the job again early Sunday as flames shot from a home on West Street around 10 a.m. Glynn said there was heavy smoke coming from the garage when crews arrived. All four occupants were able to get out unharmed. The fire was largely contained to the residence's three-car garage where it started, but Glynn noted there was smoke and fire damage to the house. The damage estimate at about $400,000. "This one was probably the most extensive," said Glynn. "There was a tremendous amount of smoke when crews arrived. It was a really difficult fire to try to extinguish. The guys did a great job on all the fires." Glynn said the investigation into this last incident is pointing to the cause being electrical. The Oakville Fire Department is reminding residents to check their smoke detectors to ensure they are in working order noting the alarm from a detector may give residents the seconds they need to get out of their home safely. In Ontario, it is also the law to have a smoke detector on every level of a home and outside every sleeping area.
