Oakville students were big winners at BASEF by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff 13 | Thursday, April 17, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Oakville students came home big winners from the recent Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF). Seventy local elementary and high school students won a variety of awards, with one of them earning a trip to the international fair and four of them heading to the national fair next month. Youths officially received the recognition at BASEF's 54th award ceremony April 1 at Mohawk College in Hamilton. St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School Grade 11 student Calvin Rieder will now head to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles, CA May 11-16. He was among the top three high school students who will represent Canada. The 17-year-old told the Oakville Beaver he's excited for the opportunity to compete at an international level with his project: Passive Manipulation of Thermal Radiation Dual Purpose Condensers to Provide Potable Water. Rieder, who placed second overall in the fair next to Hamilton student Catharine Bowman, said he previously competed at the national level and liked the experience of sharing his work with others. "It's really an amazing experience. You meet so many people from all across the country with interests in science and engineering," he said. Oakville Christian School won the Best Junior School award at the Bay Area Science & Engineering Fair (BASEF), which took place March 26-29. Rieder also took home a Gold Merit Award, Procor Engineering Award, Ricoh Sustainable Development Award and McMaster University Faculties of Science and Engineering Tuition Award. He said he's honoured to receive the recognition. "I've done a lot of work on this topic of condensing water for drinking, so it's really cool how this year it all really showed," he said, noting his previous three projects experimented with atmospheric water condensers to extract drinking water from the air. "I was able to successfully condense water and so it's just amazing to be recognized after all these years of work." Abbey Park High School students Nart Barileva and Aagnik Pant, Oakville Christian School student Eduard Brenninkmeijer and Emily Carr Public School student Jack Mogus each earned a trip to the Canada-Wide Science Fair taking place in Windsor May 10-17. Barileva and Pant presented their project: Solvent-Based Cellulose Crystallinity Minimization to Increase Cellulolysis Efficacy. It earned them a Gold Merit Award, the Chemical Institute of Canada (Hamilton Section) Award, Dr. Colin J.L. Lock Memorial Chemistry Award, McMaster University Faculties of Science and Engineering Tuition Award and McMaster University Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology Award. Brenninkmeijer's project, Flood Water Purification at Home, won a Gold Merit Award, HamiltonWentworthOccasionTeachers-Presentation & Aesthetics Award and Primary Fluid Systems Earth and Environment Award (third).
