S I G N O F . . . S P R I N G ? Blueliner climbing NHL Central Scouting rankings continued from p.32 "I remember hearing some buzz around Canada East," he says of first hearing that NHL scouts were taking notice of him. "It's a goal I've been working toward." Prapavessis was No. 137 among North American skaters in NHL Central Scouting's mid-season ranking in January. When the latest list was released earlier this month, he had climbed to No. 108. An extended playoff run and possible shot at a national title could do nothing but enhance his draft stock. Just don't expect Prapavessis to say much about it. "He never really talks about it," says his brother Matt, captain and all-conference defenceman at Bemidji State. "There's never anything more than a quick mention. He's good at focusing on just winning that next game and playing hockey." If there is a third defenceman Michael Prapavessis looks up to, it's his brother. The two play similar styles -- though with 14 penalty minutes last season, Matt is a relative goon. Matt says their styles evolved naturally. They skate together in the summers and Michael watched plenty of his older brother's games growing up. Now, Matt, who only gets to see his brother's games occasionally on the Internet, says there are elements of Michael's game he'd like to have as part of his arsenal. "His first pass, he never seems to make the wrong play," Matt says. "There are always a couple of plays that you go `Wow.' His passes are bang on, perfect every time." Prapavessis even continues to surprise those who see him on a regular basis. "You see a play he makes, outwaiting a guy before throwing it to the weak side," Tarantino says. "He makes some plays, it just shocks you when you see it out there." Fitness Testing Michael's career path was also influenced by his brother, who is five years older. Michael has committed to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute despite growing interest from the Ontario Hockey League. He was selected in the 10th round by Saginaw in the 2012 draft, but this past November his rights were acquired by the London Knights, a team that has had past success in convincing college-bound players to play for them. "He's a good player," Knights GM Mark Hunter told the London Free Press. "That's why we thought we'd take a risk at least for the future." Prapavessis said he's not been pressured, though, and he's fully committed to college. It's just further proof that lately it seems everyone wants Prapevessis -- his country, the NHL, college, the OHL. But all the attention hasn't fazed him. "I try not to think too much about it," he says. "To have this kind of special year, a lot of that comes with the team's success. Right now, I just want to finish off this series." A championship will only draw more attention to Prapavessis -- from everyone but the referees, that is. -- Herb Garbutt can be followed on Twitter @Herbgarbutt 33 | Thursday, April 17, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com A little snow didn't stop the Holy Trinity Titans from hosting a junior girls' soccer tournament Tuesday on their artificial turf field.
