www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, May 2, 2014 | 8 M&M Charity BBQ Day May 10 benefits Crohn's and Colitis Canada The M&M Meat Shops charity barbecue day is set for Saturday, May 10. The event is in support of Crohn's and Colitis Canada (formerly the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada) and is taking place at more than 400 shop locations across Canada, including those in Oakville. From 10 a.m.-4 p.m., M&M franchisees, staff and thousands of volunteers will be grilling towards their goal of raising $1 million. Those who attend can purchase a hamburger or hotdog, drink and bag of chips for a minimum donation of $3. Over the past 25 years, the annual event by M&M Meat Shops has raised more than $24 million for medical research dedicated to finding a cure for Crohn's and colitis. "Charity BBQ Day began in 1989, when Mac Voisin, founder of M&M Meat Shops, learned that Canadians suffer from these chronic diseases at an unusually high rate," stated a press release. "He quickly realized that he had the unique opportunity to help raise awareness and funds for a little-known and even less spoken-about condition and Canadian charity. Charity BBQ Day was born and Crohn's and Colitis Canada gained both a corporate sponsor and a public voice." Funds raised help Crohn's and Colitis Canada do the following: · invest in research to advance prevention, treatments, cures and health policy · educate patients, families, industry and governments · increase public awareness · advocate to governments and stakeholders on behalf of those affected Participating Oakville locations include 635 Fourth Line, 2525 Prince Michael Dr., 2163 Sixth Line, and 2524 Third Line. Correction: A photo of the Halton Healthcare Services' Physician Appreciation Week luncheon in the Wednesday, April 30 edition of the Oakville Beaver incorrectly identified Dr. Alexandra Ginty.
