In November 2013, Lyn and Jim Smith, Bryce's parents, began pleading with the Ontario government to fund the cancer drug Avastin, which they believe could improve their son's quality of life. Since Avastin isn't covered by Bryce's private insurance either, the 36-year-old, his wife Carla Brennen and their families have taken to fundraising to cover the $5,600 cost of the drug, needed every three weeks. Health Canada has approved Avastin for the treatment of brain cancer. However, Ontario only covers the cost of the drug for treatment of colorectal cancer -- a funding decision made by the province's drug evaluation committee. The garage sale will be held at 1267 Fielding Crt., from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Some items for sale include books, a glasstop stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, chairs, lamps, snow tires, electronics and clothing and accessories, among others. Those interested in donating items for the sale can call 905-842-2285 to be dropped off the week of May 5. Lyn has become the administrator of her son's Gofundme account, found online at www.gofundme.com/4xvrb0. As president and CEO of Reliance Home Comfort, O'Brien has been a senior volunteer with UWO for seven years. "I am a proud Oakville resident. There is a strong sense of belonging here. We are a generous and connected community, and I am honoured to represent an organization that ensures an essential network of programs and services work together to create lasting change in our neighbourhoods," O'Brien said in a news release. UWO CEO Brad Park said the role of campaign cabinet chair is indispensable to the success of the United Way. "Sean is a charismatic and thoughtful leader, and we are confident that his passion and expertise will serve to showcase the efforts of United Way Oakville's network of hard-working agen- cies," he said in the release. O'Brien's advocacy of community engagement began when his now nine-year-old son, Eamon, was born with life-threatening kidney problems. After a month of living at the hospital, O'Brien's family turned to Acclaim Health -- a UWOfunded agency -- for support. "Nine years ago, United Way had a profound impact on my family," said O'Brien. "Since then, it has continued to hold a prominent role in my life. I have had the privilege of seeing the impact of United Way in the community, and am thrilled to represent the organization in this capacity." Assembling his team, O'Brien will meet with representatives from more than 400 corporate accounts as UWO begins planning for its 2014 campaign. UWO funds 32 local social service agencies supporting more than 34,000 people in Oakville.
