First responders appreciate thanks continued from p.1 Ontario designated May 1 as First Responders' Day to celebrate the sacrifices and hard work of first responders who devote their lives to public service. "It is a great statement from the government to recognize the work the frontline staff do dayin and day-out," said Halton Paramedic Services Chief Greg Sage. "Paramedics, firefighters, police officers are all out on the street working to support the community and look after people. They don't do it for the recognition, they do it because it is rewarding and it is important to them. This recognition is certainly appreciated. It means a lot." Halton Police Chief Stephen Tanner agreed. "Our frontline emergency services providers work together so seamlessly, in so many emergency situations, whether they are life-threatening car accidents, fires, medical issues or major catastrophes," said Tanner. "I think this (recognition) is a great thing." Ontario's First Responders Day comes just days after Oakville Mayor Rob Burton declared May 1 as First Responders Day in Oakville during Monday's council meeting. The proclamation, presented to emergency personnel at Town council, stated first responders deserve a day of recognition because Oakville is one of the safest communities in the Greater Toronto Area and because the Town wished to acknowledge the value of all who serve in the emergency services and put their lives on the line every day for their community. Oakville MPP and Minister of Labour Kevin Flynn said emergencies may differ but the dedication of the first responders racing towards those emergencies remains the same. "We are really thankful there are people who have chosen these professions and we are so pleased they excel at these professions," he said. "On behalf of the honourable Yasir Naqvi, Minister of Community Safety and Premier (Kathleen) Wynne I want to thank you for what you have done as a council, but more importantly I want to thank the men and women behind me here (first responders) who have done so much Celebrating First Responders Day, from left, Halton Paramedic Services Chief Greg Sage, Oakville Fire Chief Lee for our community."
