As the national president of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Grod had joined Prime Minister Stephen Harper on his trip to the Ukraine to meet the new interim government and to lend support for its legitimacy. Grod stayed behind for a few more days while the PM flew to The Hague to attend the G7 summit. Grod was about to walk into a meeting with the new president when he received a phone call from the PM's office telling him that he was one of 13 Canadians banned from travelling to Russia by Russian President Vladimir Putin in retaliation for Canadian sanctions over Russia's annexation of the Crimea. Grod was the only non-government official on the list, which included Harper. "We (Putin and him) have never met and I'm not in any rush to do so," Grod said Wednesday during an exclusive interview with the Oakville Beaver at St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Oakville. Earlier in the day, Grod, also a parishioner, attended a dinner for Patriarch Sviatoslav (Shevchuk), the Archbishop Major of Kyiv and the world-wide spiritual leader of the Ukrainian Catholic Church.
