Five Oakville residents play in OHL Gold Cup under-16 tournament Five of the nine Oakville residents drafted in last month's Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection competed in the OHL Gold Cup last weekend. Matthew Thom, Kyle Maksimovich and Matthew Danner helped Greater Toronto Hockey League Blue win four of five games to reach the final of the eight-team competition. GTHL Blue lost the championship game 5-2 to Ontario Minor Hockey Association White. Maksimovich tied for fourth place in tournament scoring, collecting four goals and three assists. He was the first local player selected in the OHL draft, going in the third round to the Erie Otters. Thom was a fourth-round selection of the Kingston Frontenacs, and Danner went in the 14th round to the Saginaw Spirit. Evan Brown and Domenico Commisso were part of the GTHL Red squad that went 3-2 at the OHL Gold Cup. Brown was picked by the Guelph Storm, directly after Maksimovich in the third round. Commisso was selected in the fifth round by the Oshawa Generals. The OHL Gold Cup is an annual event that features Ontario's top under-16 talent and is an evaluation and selection process for Team Canada. Participating minor hockey organizations include the GTHL, OMHA, Hockey Eastern Ontario, Hockey Northwestern Ontario, Northern Ontario Hockey Association and Minor Hockey Alliance of Ontario. 41 | Thursday, May 15, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Climbing & Adventure Centre Learn to climb, hang out with the family. www.ymcaofoakville.com Best Buy CORRECTION NOTICE NEWSPAPER RETRACTION FOR THE BEST BUY MAY 9 CORPORATE FLYER In the May 9 flyer, page 7, the Linksys N300/300 Range Extender (WebCode: 10241876) was advertised with an incorrect logo. New display tribute to first HSSAA convener In the lobby of Burlington's Dr. Frank J. Hayden Secondary School hangs a montage of photos featuring Peter Moore. Moore, who died last August at the age of 77, was Halton's first high school athletic convener. The tribute, which includes a bench beneath the photos, is at Burlington's newest high school for a very good reason. Moore's charity of choice was the Special Olympics, a concept originated by Burlington resident Frank Hayden. Funds were raised for the plaque and bench from a memorial held last fall at Jake's Grill, which drew 125 family members and friends. Remaining funds were donated to the Special Olympics Burlington, which hosted a floor hockey tournament in Peter Moore's name last winter. For more than 40 years, one might find Moore, nicknamed Two-Six, refereeing local and university football and basketball games or umpiring Ontario fastball contests. In 1994, in his late 50s, Moore started convening high school sports for both Halton boards until retiring in 2005. On Now at The Brick!
