May Court Club's Table Tops gives ROCK solid foundation by John Bkila Oakville Beaver Staff 9 | Friday, May 16, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com After a successful start last year, this year's edition of the May Court Club of Oakville's Table Tops is double in size and organizers hope the May 2425 `design mecca' will raise thousands of dollars for children's mental health. "We've been blessed to get support from the local community to put on such a spectacular event that will help such an important cause," said May Court Club member Fulvia Walton, who cochairs Table Tops with Charlotte Riddell. Table Tops was a one-day event that drew 340 people last year. This time around, more than 600 guests are expected at the now two-day event that's aiming to raise $25,000 for the Reach Out Centre for Kids (ROCK). ROCK provides family-centred mental health services for children and adolescents. The brainchild of May Court member Dede Hacking, Table Tops will be hosted by Appleby College, located at 540 Lakeshore Rd. W., and feature 26 exhibits from designers, retail furniture stores, event planners and professional stagers. "They're creating vignettes that centre around at least one table top, which can be anything from a coffee table to a dining table," said Walton. A speaker series will feature 16 seminars on decorating and entertaining, as well as an `ask the expert' booth. A French café will offer a menu of ham-and-brie sandwiches, smoked salmon, coffee, tea and sweets. On the Saturday night, a cocktail party will be catered by food expert and author Nadine Hughes, and will include 10 French cheese-tasting stations. The party, emceed by The Wine Ladies, who will interview TV hosts Bryan and Sarah Bauemler, of Oakville, will also feature guest speaker Dr. Angela Saunders of ROCK, a silent auction, entertainment and music. We like to find those organizations that are a little under the radar. Not to say ROCK (Reach Out Centre for Kids) is such a program, but we felt the work it does in the community garnered some attention from us. "This (Table Tops) is our way of helping out in our community and that's why we chose to raise funds for ROCK." The volunteer-run May Court Club is a service club that traditionally fundraises for grassroots, start-up programs, Walton said. "We like to find those organizations that are a little under the radar," she said. "Not to say ROCK is such a program, but we felt the work it does in the community garnered some attention from us. "It offers free programs to struggling youths and their families with a walk-in clinic, crisis hotline... It's the first step in getting help immediately, which is crucial with respect to children and youths." Table Tops will run 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, while the cocktail party is 7-10 p.m. One-day general admission costs $30, while an $85 ticket will give people entry to the cocktail party and general admission for one day. Tickets can be purchased at the door or by calling 905-257-2633 -- participants must preregister online for the speaker series at www. maycourt.ca.
