That narrow space and concrete slab can be daunting. Fortunately, it's as easy as knowing what you want! Is it a great space for entertaining? Maybe you'd like a little outdoor grill? Could it be a private oasis for a morning coffee or evening cocktail? Do you want the space to reflect the décor in the rest of your home, or is it an opportunity for something totally different? Whatever you decide will inform your direction for decorating. First, check with your property manager or condominium director. Many buildings won't allow propane BBQs, but a small electric grill might be acceptable. If you hope to have a water feature, you will also have to check on weight restrictions and scale your dreams to fit. Remember that you need not have a huge tub of water for a fountain; you can achieve a similar effect with a small wall-hung water feature. For furnishings, cast aluminum can be a great choice as it can remain outdoors all year round. Similarly, vinyl wicker needs only to be covered in the winter to stay looking great for years and it comes in a rainbow of colours to choose from. Also consider the height of furniture. Bistro or bar height tables and chairs will afford an unobstructed view for you and your guests. The direction your balcony faces will direct your plant options. A south- or west-facing balcony will get full sun throughout the summer. Choose plants that can take the heat and consider adding some shade elements. Annuals like 3 3 3 geraniums and petunias love the heat and come in a riot of colours. North or east balconies will be cooler and much shadier. Choose ferns for lush greenery and impatiens and begonias for more drama.
