Walking to combat youths' greatest disabler Oakville families and friends are joining communities across Ontario this weekend to rally support and awareness while fundraising to help those affected by schizophrenia and psychosis. The Oakville edition of the Peace of Minds Walk for Schizophrenia will be held tomorrow (Saturday). The annual fundraiser will take place at Coronation Park, 1426 Lakeshore Rd. W. The walk is one of nine being held across the province and is the largest fundraising event for the Schizophrenia Society of Ontario (SSO). Now in its 21st year, the event has raised more than $1 million to date for programs and services that support individuals and families living with schizophrenia. "Too often, people with schizophrenia are met by discrimination and the issues that they face on a daily basis are ignored. Seeing people out in support of the cause sends the message that mental illness affects us all -- and lets people know that help is available for those who need it." According to the SSO, schizophrenia affects one in 100 people -- approximately 350,000 in Canada and 120,000 in Ontario -- while only one out of five young people who need mental health services receives them in a timely way. "Schizophrenia is youths' greatest disabler and often manifests in adolescence or early adulthood: in males, usually between ages 15-25 and in females, usually between ages 20-35," said the release. "Genetic factors and environmental factors or stress can play a role in the onset of schizophrenia." Saturday's walk begins at 11:30 a.m., with registration starting at 10:30 a.m. To register online, donate to the cause or sponsor a participant, visit www. peaceofmindswalk.ca. 3 | Friday, May 23, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com "In addition to raising funds, this event is about getting out into the public space and making people aware of schizophrenia and psychosis," Mary Alberti, SSO CEO, said in a news release. inside today's Editorial Sports Beaver www.insideHALTON.com Sore Feet, Sports Injury, Painful Ingrown Toenails?
